The Central New Jersey Hound Association (CNJHA) presented its inaugural event on Thursday, May 4th, and by all measures it was a smashing success! Exhibits came from 25 states, ranging from Arizona and California to Maine to Florida, as well as Canada! Success is not measured by entries alone, but the 526 dogs and 679 total entries exceeded ALL expectations and underscores exhibitor support of the Group show concept. Sweepstakes classes attracted 141 entries, and an unbelievable 31 hounds were entered in obedience! Afghans lead the entries with 102 and were closely followed by Whippets (75), Pharaoh Hounds (66), Rhodesian Ridgebacks (65), Borzois (60), Dachshunds (60), and Salukis (55).

The venue at the Mercer County Park (site of the Trenton Kennel Club show) provided beautiful grounds and convenient access, and Mother Nature cooperated by providing a nearly ideal Spring day. Logistical constraints dictated a relaxed starting time of noon, which was a welcome change; however, it did evoke a pang of anxiety as dusk and group judging appeared to be on a collision course! Fortunately, all turned out well, and group judging was completed as the sun set over the darkening horizon!

The casual observer - even the seasoned dog-show junkie - would have been hard-pressed to know this was the club's first show! No efforts were spared in addressing site preparation, ring layout, and the exhibitors' needs. The closely cropped grass and the white ring equipment presented a pleasing contrast; the distinctive ring markers, beautiful floral decorations, and impressive array of crystal trophies added to the ambiance of the day! Exhibitors appreciated the complimentary fruits, cheeses, pastries, snack items, and soft drinks offered during mid-afternoon.

The CNJHA was fortunate in being able to assemble a blue ribbon judging panel that represented a virtual who's who in hounds: Regular class judging was headed by Dr. John Reeve-Newson, who selected Best-in-Group; Mr. Michael Canalizo, Mr. Kent Delaney, and Dr. Richard Meen, Chairman of the Canadian Kennel Club, rounded out the panel. Sweepstakes class judges also are widely known in the hound community: Mr. Dennis Sprung, Vice President of the American Kennel Club, selected Best-in-Sweepstakes; Mr. William Mott; Mrs. Virginia Scott; and Mr. Ray Scott, of the AKC Executive Field Staff, added their expertise. Mr. John Landis presided over the obedience classes, and Mr. Jerry Clark selected the Best Junior Handler.

The CNJHA extends its appreciation to all the exhibitors who supported this event and invites all hound fanciers to join them next year!
